PAPPAYA (OMAKKA) THORAN







I have been posting lots of thorans and other Kerala side dishes here and that is only because without these side dishes we malayalees would have a hard time eating. Aside from rice and chamanthi keralities love their mzhupuratti and thoran (stir fry).





Pappaya Thoran is one of those dishes with lots of health benefits. Pappaya is a rich source of Vitamin C, B, folate, pantothenic acid, fiber, magnesium, copper, potassium, etc.




INGREDIENTS



Prep Time: 15 mins
Cook Time : 10 mins
Total Time: 25-30 mins
Serves: 4-5




  • Green Pappaya (grated)          - 2 cups
  • Grated Coconut                  - 1/2 cup
  • Shallots/ Small Onion (sliced)  - 4-5
  • Garlic (minced)                 - 2
  • Turmeric Powder                 - 1/4 tsp
  • Cumin Seeds (crushed)           - 1/4 tsp
  • Mustard Seeds                   - 1/4 tsp
  • Green Chilies (sliced)          - 3-4
  • Dry Red Chilies                 - 2
  • Coconut Oil                     - 1 1/2 tbsp.
  • Curry Leaves                    - 1 sprig
  • Salt to Taste                   
METHOD OF PREPARATION STEP BY STEP


1.Remove the skin and deseed papaya. Clean and pat dry. Grate the papaya. Crush the grated coconut, cumin seeds and green chilies with your hand. Set aside.

2.Heat oil in a thick bottomed pan, splutter mustard seeds. Add sliced shallots, dry red chilies and garlic and saute it for few minutes.

3.Add grated papaya, turmeric powder, curry leaves and salt. Saute it for few minutes over medium heat.

4.Add coconut mixture and mix well. Sprinkle a little water and cook covered over medium low heat for few minutes.

5.Open the lid and stir fry over medium heat until dry. Remove from heat.

SERVE WITH PLAIN RICE
