LAYERED CHAPATI / INDIAN BREAD

During my college years back in India, I had these group of friends who would regularly try to be on diet and the only food they always ate was chapati and another side. A small misconception that  we all have is, we think eating chapati would help us lose weight and get a better figure. This is not true. I was never a fan of regular chapati, so I always forced my mom to make layered chapati, which is my favorite.

INGREDIENTS

Prep Time: 30 mins
Cook Time:
15 mins
Total Time:
35-40 mins
Serves: 10-12 chapathi
  • Wheat Flour                   - 1 cup
  • Oil                           - 4 tbsp.
  • Lukewarm Water                - 1 1/2 cup
  • Extra Flour (for dusting)     - 1/2 cup
  • Salt to taste
METHOD OF PREPARATION STEP BY STEP

1.Combine wheat flour and salt in a wide bowl.

2.Add a table spoon of oil (any refined oil) into the flour.

3.Add water little by little and knead the flour to prepare the smooth dough.

4.Move your dough to a clean cutting board or clean counter top and knead it well for few minutes to get the dough soft, smooth and elastic. Apply a little oil over the dough, so that the dough will not get dry.

5.Knead the dough again for sometime. Make the small balls of equal size with the dough.

6.Take one ball of dough and press the dough ball with a chapati roller into circle. Apply few drops of oil on the one surface of the chapati or brush some oil on the chapati.

7.Fold one side of the chapati into the center. Then fold each of the other three ends of the chapati.

8.Dust with wheat flour and roll the chapati into square shape with the chapati roller.

9.Heat the pan/ skillet over medium flame until hot. Put few drops of oil on the pan and put the chapati on the pan/ tava. Cook until the underside gets cooked and has golden brown spots. Then flip and cook the other side. Continue same with remaining dough.

SERVE WITH ANY CURRIES OR STEWS
ENJOY!!
